'I knew I was gambling'
The huge success of Ala Modalaindi came as a surprise to movie buffs and debutant female writer-director, Nandini Reddy, is in complete awe of the response she has been getting from the audience and well-wishers.
“I never thought this movie will get such an awesome response, I just gave my best and worked very hard. This is what happens when you believe in yourself,” says Nandini. “It feels nice to make people happy. I feel blessed.” For her the best part is that so many people are talking about the movie and recommending others to watch it. “When I wrote the script, I knew I was gambling,” she adds.
So how does it feel when people talk about a movie by a female director doing well? “Since the movie released that is the talk everywhere — a lady director made a movie. I do feel proud of myself, but it is a job a lady can also do,” she replies. “My friend Anjana is directing a thriller in Tamil and is waiting to watch the response from people. A lady director making a thriller — sure, that will be the talk in days to come!”
Nanandi says she flitted between pursuing different careers, from prawn culturing and advertising to medicine and engineering. After managing to confuse everyone at home she completed her Masters in International Politics before becoming a clap assistant to Gunnam Gangaraju for Little Soldiers. “I was always confused. I even joined a women’s college to play cricket,” she says. “After studying International Politics, I thought, ‘I cannot be diplomatic’, so I didn’t pursue that field. Then I did photography, visual media, used to copy write and then came along Little Solders.”
Quizzed on her next venture, Nandini says she is still enjoying the success of this movie. “It’s a tough task now, because after the success of my first movie, people will expect a lot from me. I do not want to rush into something and disappoint them.”
And does she have any tips for upcoming lady directors? “Just do not give up, do your best, and I hope that my example will help people to think positive and believe they can achieve their goal,” she says.
Now, since her career is on track, what about marriage? “No, not for now,” she laughs. “For now I am just very busy with my film career.”

Sonia Should Resign: Venkataswamy
Senior Congress member G Venkataswamy blamed Sonia Gandhi for all the debacles that the Congress party was facing.
1st Feb, 2011: Congress Working Committee member G Venkataswamy on Tuesday knocked the sycophancy out of his party leadership by demanding that party President Sonia Gandhi resigned from her post immediately.
Talking to media persons at his residence, the senior Congress leader stated that he foresaw no life in the party if Gandhi continued in her post.
Venkataswamy, popularly known as 'Kaka', stated that the popularity of the Congress was waning and it had now reached a nadir, managing to remain in power in only 5 states out of the 29 states in the country. The party's popularity was dwindling under the Gandhi's leadership, he opined.
The senior leader also predicted that the Congress would be wiped out from the country if she continued as the party president.
Venkataswamy, whose disenchantment against Gandhi is well known, especially after his candidature for the President's post was given a go-by and Pratibha Patil was preferred, stated that the Congress party needed a person from Indian soil to be elected to such a high post. This would protect the interests of party, he said.
Taking strong objection to the proposed alliance between the Congress and the Praja Rajyam Party, Venkataswamy said that the party high command should have informed the seniors, particularly from Andhra Pradesh, before taking any steps on the issue. He said that the high command had acted hastily on the issue.
The senior politician added that the high command had insulted other senior leaders by not taking their views on the alliance.
"What is the need for the Congress to seek alliance with a party such as the PRP, especially when it enjoys a majority?" Venkataswamy questioned. The Congress, which had 125 years of history behind it, should not pamper the PRP for an alliance, he pointed out.
Referring to Union Defence Minister A K Antony calling on PRP chief K Chiranjeevi at his residence, Venkataswamy said that this was not proper.
Venkataswamy opined that the people's representatives had won in the name of the Congress party but not in the name of Sonia Gandhi.
He further opined that the rampant corruption at the centre and the state governments would be contained only if Gandhi resigned from her post of party president.
Stating that he would not quit the party under any circumstances, Venkataswamy said that no one had the power to take action against him or his family members.
"I have been a Congress member right from the times of former prime ministers Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi", he said.
Venkataswamy revealed that he had sought Gandhi's appointment thrice, but she had no time to meet him.
The senior leader further called upon Congress leaders from Telangana to open their eyes on the latest political situation, and said that they should resist the proposed alliance with the PRP, which was an avowedly integrationist party.

Wanted is an out and out commercial film packed with some unexpected punches.
The pre release talk and buzz on Wanted are good and we can expect this Telugu movie to bag some favorable reviews. Let’s hope Gopichand hits bull’s eye this time.

Review
Story
Rambabu (Gopichand) is the young man who has no job at all. Peculiarly, his parents (Chandramohan and Jayasudha) also encourage their son to stay only at home and eat without doing any job. Accidentally he falls in love with a medico Nandini (Deeksha Seth) who has a secret mission. Although she is a medical student, her flash back pushes her to do certain activities secretly. What are those activities? That is a facet of heroine.
Eventually Nandini uses Rambabu’s love on her to take vengeance on the criminals those made her family an ash. What is the vengeance and who put an end to her family?
There comes Basivi Reddy (Prakash Raj), a rugged gangster who killed Nandini’s family members. Hence he faces trouble from Rambabu as a part of Nandini’s revenge. What happens next is an easy guess.
Artists Performance:
Gopichand is fine with his habitual performance. There is a humor line in his characterization and he carried that well.
Deeksha Seth is just there for some glamour but that glamour is not exploited well. She has to get trained in the aspect of performance and expressions.
Jayasudha and Chandramohan are ok in their roles. Barhmanandam’s comedy is weak.
Prakash Raj’s character lacks depth. Nazar’s role is impressive.
Coming to technical aspects, cinematography scores good marks. Music is average. Story is good, screenplay is bad and dialogues are ok.

Final Analysis:
Writer BVS Ravi debuted with this film. Huge casting, good production values and required technicians joined him. He weaved the story point impressively but goofed up with screenplay. The interval bang could be when heroine throws the pistol in hero’s hands. But the break happened after a fight which spoiled the suspense factor. Second half picked up during heroine’s flash back but again dropped with elastic narration.
On a whole, watching ‘Wanted’ is like a bumpy ride. The graph suffered several ups and downs. Director would have done enough homework to tight the loose ends. The movie could have sounded better had he made corrections in screenplay in the matter of length of scenes, comedy track and depth in villain characters.
Take off is impressive but the first half on a whole is passive. Second half picks up at a few moments but falls down at climax with routine and predictable scenes. This revenge drama would have worked really well if director’s judgment was corrected.
